Fennel Seed
Fennel is an aromatic seed with an anise-like flavor. It is native to southern Europe and the Mediterranean area. Today much of it comes from India and Egypt. Like so many delightful herbs, it is a member of the parsley family and has a history that dates back to ancient times. Fennel is great with fish and is used in Italian sausages and some curry powder mixes. Fennel seed can be added to meatballs or meat loaf, sprinkled over apples in a pie, or used on top of Italian breads. Toasting fennel seeds enhances their flavor.
